Twinkle Toes is FIVE months old!

Twinkle Toes - YOU ARE FIVE MONTHS OLD!!!!!
Adjusted/Corrected age of 16 weeks

WHAT ARE YOU UP TO THESE DAYS???
·    At last check (12/27) You weighed 13 lbs 1.5 oz
·    You are at least 21 inches long! We’ll have an official measurement on 12/27 (this didn’t happen, so I’m not 100% sure)!
·    You wear a size 2 diaper
·    You are pretty much in 6 months sized clothes
·    Your eyes are blue – we wonder if this will change
·    Your hair is starting to come in and its darker than we ever expected!
·    You sleep from 8 pm until 4 am!!!  Nicely done little girl.
·    You LOVE when I talk to you – You light up and make mommy so happy!
  • If I lay you down anywhere - you are a rolling machine. You can do a push up at times and it is just a matter of time before you start rolling over full time
  • We believe you are slowly working on some bottom teeth.
  • You are happy and content at home – you really have no choice given we are in full swing with cold and flu season.
  • You make bubbles all the time!
  • Just when I think I have you figured out - you start something new.
  • You love looking at the Christmas lights on the tree
  • You just love your activity mat singing to you!  You are such a happy girl!
  • You will turn your little head and try to find daddy or mommy when we first come into the room you are in.
  • You love to hear yourself talk and mommy loves your giggle.
  • You are finally sleeping in your crib on your back but you are a real roly poly and move all over your crib.
  • You are pulling my hair now. And also grabbing for everything - including your bib which you love to eat. ha!
·    You are a total momma's girl and maybe a little spoiled - but I wouldn't have it any other way!
I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW FAST YOU ARE GROWING!

Rembering when....

I remember when you ate 45 ML's (1.5 ozs !)and we couldn't believe you were eating so much!
I remember when preemie diapers were a little too big!
I remember when your bibs seemed to eat you alive.
I remember when we had rolls in your car seat so your head wouldn't bobble or body slide forward.
I remember when socks were too big and you'd kick them off.
I remember when you looked so small in your swing we thought it may take you to the moon (and that's why you weren't in it until you hit 8 lbs!).
I remember when the nasal bulb wouldn't fit in your nostril.
I remember when most hats would fall below your eyes.
I remember when your pacifier looked bigger then half of your face, and that was the preemie sized one!!
I remember when we had to sponge bathe you because your bath tub was just too big!
I remember when someone would be up around the clock with you because you were so tiny we were scared to go to sleep.
I remember when we used receiving blankets to swaddle you.
I remember when you couldn't lay on your boppy. You could have just laid in the center of it.
I remember when everyone would say, "She's so small!"

Now you eat 5 ounces!
Now you wear size 1-2 diapers and even those are looking smaller by the day on you.
Now I'm putting bibs in the 'to small' box.
Now your newborn insert may come out soon.
Now you can wear even the big socks!
Now it looks like you weigh the swing down!
Now we have no problem getting those boggies out!
Now some hats are fitting on your head OR even getting to be too small!
Now your pacifier is the perfect size even though you rarely want it or take it!
Now your barely fitting in your infant tub!
Now we ALL sleep so soundly when you do.
Now your almost to long for many of your 3 month sleepers!
Now you tower over your boppy!
Now everyone says, "She's getting to be so big!"

Product Review - Simple Wishes Hands free Pumping Bra

I apologize for all of the pumping accessory reviews but these items have been lifesaver for me!

Simples Wishes makes a wonderful hands free pumping bra (huge when you a pumping) that is adjustable.  Adjustablility is important when you milk hasn't come in or after several months and you get smaller - yes, they both happen!  Ahhhh, the joys of breastfeeding or being a pumper!

I will say this - the pictures of uses, on their website is a bit ridiculous but ehhh, whatever.

This item has allowed me to work on my laptop, read magazines and books and even eat all while pumping.

Why we needed an RE

Some of you may remember that we sought help to conceive.  I wanted to back track and provide details as to why we needed an RE.

The Female Issues

The main issue with me is AGE. Of course, it is always age. Ugh – I really hate that and it really is something that is out of my control. So I met the man of my dreams later in life - whatever!

The other minor issue is that I have what is known as an Arcuate Configuration of the Uterus. In the easiest way that I can explain it, I have a small cleft or impression at the top of my uterus. This is considered a normal variant and it is NOT associated with an increased risk of obstetric/gynecologic complications found in other subtypes like a Bicornuate or Septate uterus. Here is a picture of an Arcuate Uterus with a picture of a typical uterus:

Can you see the minor difference? Look at the VERY top of the first image - see the little drop down in the middle - yep, that's it! That is what is deemed as a Arcuate uterus!

The Male Issues

As I had suspected all along, Mister B did have a minor issue which most likely is the reason we couldn't get pregnant! He has what is known as Mild Teratospermia (what a mouthful). For a better explanation of Teratospermia click here

 The Plan
So that led us to a medicted IUI cycle. We had to do 2 medicated IUI's to get pregnant with Twinkle Toes.

Each cycle entailed me taking Clomid (50 mg) on cycle days 5-9 (with monitoring). I used my CBEFM to test my urine for LH testing.  But I had a surprise on IUI #1!  My CBEFM never detected the surge.  So after CD 16 came and went WITHOUT an LH surge, I had to do ah hCG trigger with both IUI's.  Then the following mornings, we would do the insemination.

After the LH surge, on days 8 and 11, I will had blood work done to determine my luteal progesterone levels.

It has been a year since our first unsuccessful IUI.  I know we were incredibly lucky to get pregnant with Twinkle Toes on our 2nd IUI!  It doesn't always happen that quickly.

RSV Shot #1 is on board

Twinkle Toes had her first RSV shot yesterday.  This shot IS NOT a vaccine.  Instead it is a set of antibodies which will last a mere 30 days and will need to be repeated every month until April or May.  It all depends on the cold and flu season in our state and region.

The CDC has an awesome tracking tool which allows parents and doctors to see how RSV and the Flu are progressing thru-out the country.  Check it out here.  You can do the same type of "surveillance" for the flu!

But the best news of the nurse visit was that Twinkle Toes is now weighing in at 12 lbs. 2 oz.!  She has gained 7 oz in 7 days!  Right on track.

What questions to ask your insurance company

Most RE offices will ask that YOU, the Patient, contact your insurance company. Before calling your insurance company, have this information on hand:

Note: I know these should be "common sense" but I like to be thorough!

• Name of the insured individual
• Employee/Patient ID Number or Social Security Number
• Name of employer
• Name of plan
• Group code/ number
• Patient’s name and date of birth

Be sure to get the name (or agent #) of the person to whom you are speaking with and his or her telephone and extension number.

Answers to the following question will help you understand which procedures will be covered and reimbursed during the course of your therapy for infertility. Remember if you are unsatisfied with the answers you receive; ask to speak to a supervisor or another representative who is more familiar with the infertility benefits.

Important Questions For YOU to ask Your Insurance Company

• What are my infertility benefits?
• What is excluded?
• What do the benefits cover?
• Do they cover diagnostic procedures done in an office setting?
• Do they cover treatment procedures done in an office setting?
• Do they cover drug therapy?
• What types of treatment are covered? Intrauterine insemination? In vitro Fertilization? ICSI intracytoplasmic sperm injection)?
• Do I need a referral for diagnostic procedures or treatment?
• Do I need pre certification?
• What are the maximum allowed attempts for non-IVF procedures, such as artificial insemination?
• What are the maximum allowed attempts for In vitro fertilization?
• Are donor sperm and egg options covered?
• Is the egg donor covered by my plan if she has complications?
• Do I need to use specific pharmacies or mail – order pharmacies?
• Do I have a pre existing clause?
• If I have a Dollar benefit, how much of this has been used? How much of this benefit is left?

Since this post may not be that easy to print, I have created a handy PDF file that I’d be more than willing to email to readers.

Is your RE clinic worth their weight?

Many of you live in areas where there is more than one IVF center. Choosing a center is one of the most important decisions you will make. How do you choose? Well, most of us get a referral from a friend or doctor, and then go and check it out. If we like the doctor we saw, we assume he or she is the very best, and go with the recommended treatment plan.Well, there are a lot of clinics that are very popular, get many local referrals and have very nice doctors and staff. The problem is that many of these clinics have low pregnancy rates, and they are not advertising this fact. Why does it matter? Compare a good clinic with a pregnancy rate of 50% to a not so good clinic with a 30% pregnancy rate. The math is easy: out of 100 patients, 50 had a baby on their first try at clinic 1, while only 30 had a baby at clinic 2.

Well the majority of reputable RE clinics are members of an organization called SART. This stands for the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies.

Most members of SART submit their pregnancy rates, via computer, to the SART office. SART then works with the Center for Disease Control (otherwise known as the CDC) and produces a report. This report has the pregnancy rates for each clinic in the country. It can be viewed by going here:
http://www.sart.org/

Just click on the state and look for your clinic.
You want to look at the live births per retrieval. This means the chance of having a baby if you made it to the point where your eggs were removed. Once you see this clearly, it’s easy to click onto any clinic’s page and look at their rates for comparison. If your clinic is not listed, that’s a very bad sign. Some are not listed because they are too new to get on, but most who don’t report don’t report for a reason: their numbers are low. There is no excuse for a clinic not to report. Some will say they don’t report to SART because SART does not calculate the numbers correctly; not so.

You can also see that there is a delay in reporting. This is because deliveries occur well after the IVF cycle, plus it takes some time to get the reports out.

If your doctor doesn’t report, beware. If your doctor blurts out numbers (this is really common), the numbers are usually exaggerated. Go to the web and check the facts yourself. And don’t listen to anyone who says their numbers are lower because they take the harder cases. The clinics with the best numbers have the best reputations and attract many, many women who have failed other clinics first.

Please note: These reports are providing data on IVF cycles but it is still very wise for future patients to research their potential clinic and their numbers.

I first wrote this when I was a contributor on Bloomin Babies.

Product Review - Pumpin' Pal Super Shields

Yes they look odd but they truly are amazing - especially compared to the Medela shields.  These have allowed me to continue to pump.  With the Medela shields, I had caused some serious damage to myself - No Joke!

Any pumping momma should own a pair of these.  These also help you NOT have to lean forward to allow the pumped milk to drain into the bottles.  Which also means, no back strain!

These can be used with your current pump too!

Truly a life / pumping saver!  You can order these either as a kit or individually (see the very bottom of that page).  Also helpful is the sizing chart

Awesome Website

I think many of us new mom's all wonder if we are doing the right things developmentally for our little ones.  While reading Kelly's Korner blog recently, I ran across an old post of hers which mentioned the Productive Parenting website.

You can enter your child's age and it will email you daily, with age appropriate activities!  You can also search the site for ideas.

I've been using Twinkle Toes adjusted age and so far, so good.  I guess I'm actually doing something right in my parenting adventures!

Reflection

There are times that I look at this little girl

And it is just so hard for me to remember that she once looked like this
Her head was the size of my fist!

Or that her little legs looked like chicken legs - poor thing!
So small, fragile and willing to thrive!

Or that she lived like this for the first few weeks of her life

It was a triumph to get her to finish a 2 oz bottle!

This was one of her first days at HOME!

And now she growing

And Growing!

And is now completely off of the Oxygen that helped her lungs develop and become stronger in our thin high altitude air!

And she is now smiling, giggling and totally fascinated with the lights of the season! (Picture to come soon!)

Ok enough reflection!  I truly can't believe it is nearly December 1st!

Product Review - Eye Serum

As a working mom, time is in short supply.  I'm constantly go, Go, GO!!  I no longer have the time to pamper myself - big surprise, right?!

Well I have found this awesome product to help the skin around my eyes
Clinique's All about Eyes Serum!

It is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!  So quick as it has a rollerball that not only feels nice and cool when applied but it's just the right amount everytime.  It's like a little eye massage everytime I apply it too.  It has helped with the mild dark circles that I have had from time to time.

It is a bit expensive but totally worth it, in my opinion.

Twinkle Toes is FOUR months old today!

Twinkle Toes - you are FOUR months old!!!!
Adjusted/Corrected age of 10 weeks

What are you up to these days????

I love the little Turkey's on her sleeper!

·    You are completely off of the Oxygen!  This makes mommy and daddy VERY happy.
·    You have learned to grab - you are most interested in my hair.  You are starting to grab your toys and hold on to them now.
·    You smile when I talk to you.  You are starting to laugh more and more each day.
·     You turn to look at us when you hear our voices. Especially for your daddy. When he comes home from work and you hear him - you always turn and look like "where did you come from daddy" and then you flash the biggest smile. You love him so much!
·    You are getting so tall. You really aren't very chubby - you are just long!
·    You are wearing 3-6 months size clothes and a size 1 diaper but I think that will quickly change.  Hopefully we can use up ALL of the size 1 diapers unlike the NB diapers.
·    We will see how much you weigh on 11/29.
·    You still like to eat about every 3 to 3 1/2 hours - 24/7. You rarely get up during the night.  Mommy and Daddy are truly thrilled that you sleep so well at night!
·    Every morning Daddy feeds you while I get ready for work - I love that time with you. We sit in Mommy’s office and you watch her get ready while you eat your bottle.
·    You hate hates and your car seat!
·    You really only cry now when you are really tired.
·    You are constantly reaching for your fingers to chew on them. We don’t think you are teething but maybe you just like to chew.
·    You still love your bath. You just chew your fingers and lay there like you could lay there forever. You are always so content at bath time.
·    Every morning when I wake up for the last time......you are always laying in your bed just as happy as a lark.
·    You are very close to rolling over.  You’ll typically roll to your left or right side and then roll right to your back again.
·    You are the Joy of mine and your daddy's lives!!!!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  We know we have many reasons to be thankful, how about you?

Things to keep track of during your time in the NICU

Did you know that you can deduct medical-related mileage and medical expenses from your taxes?

Per the IRS.gov website "You may deduct transportation costs primarily for and essential to medical care that qualify as medical expenses. The actual fare for a taxi, bus, train, or ambulance can be deducted. If you use your car for medical transportation, you can deduct actual out-of-pocket expenses such as gas and oil, or you can deduct the standard mileage rate for medical expenses. With either method you may include tolls and parking fees.   You may include in medical expenses the incidental cost of meals and lodging charged by a hospital or similar institution if your principal reason for being there is to receive medical care."

If you haven't already, start keeping track of your trips to the hospital or doctor offices. For 2010, the standard mileage rate for the cost of operating your car for medical reasons is 16.5 cents per mile.

That can add up and you should take advantage of it.
  • Keep a notebook in your car or at home listing each visit that you make to the hospital. Note the date and where you were traveling from. This will ensure that you keep an accurate record.
  • Use your car's trip odometer to track how far away the hospital is from your house, office or anywhere else your routinely travel from to get to the hospital OR use Google Maps to determine your roundtrip mileage using the route you take.
  • Once your baby is out of the hospital, keep track of mileage for doctor visits as well
  • Keep all receipts for medicine, equipment, and insurance co-pays. These expenses can also be deducted from your taxes.
Check with your tax preparer on all guidelines and rules before filing.  This IRS publication helps explain everything in more detail.  And this page also explains it really well.

This can be a huge savings when it comes down to it.

Product Review - Birth Announcements

I wanted a special birth announcement for Twinkle Toes and knew that the standard birth announcement really wasn't what I had in mind.

I asked on a local message board and was told about Four Harp Designs on Etsy.  I am a HUGE Etsy lover and I love to support Etsy sellers.  Best yet, Four Harp Designs is a mommy run business, which I love.  Not only does Four Harp offer regular announcements but birth announcements for Preemies!

I found the perfect announcement for Twinkle Toes:
I know this may be hard to read, but what makes this announcement unique is that it includes the "Welcome Home" date and stats.  That makes this announcement one-of-a-kind in my book.

I worked with the owner and within a few short hours, she had the entire announcement ready.  The best part is that I did the printing.  She sets it up where you receive an electronic file, you save it and take it to your local print shop (Costco in my case) and I was able to print them and have them in my hands and ready for mailing within an hour!

This also allowed me to pick out really nice envelopes to coordinate with the announcements too.  I spent a total of $50 for 100 announcements, 100 envelopes and the digital file.  That is far cheaper than any other site I priced and I still supported a momma, which really made me happy.

Today is National Prematurity Awareness Day!

I’m going to rock you to the core:  Nearly 5,000 preemies will NEVER see their room!  Sobering huh?!!
As you look at the latest picture of Twinkle Toes in today’s Wordless Wednesday, I would like to remind my readers of a few things.
  • You’d never know that she was born 7 weeks premature
  • You’d never know that she weighed 3 lbs. 4 oz. at birth
  • You’d never know that rather than snuggle with her after her birth, my husband and I watched nurses feverishly work on her to force air into her lungs to keep her alive and breathing.
  • You’d never know that she was 10 days old before she was held by her parents for the first time.
  • You’d never know that for the first month of her life she lived in an isolette where the temperature was constantly monitored.
  • You’d never know that she was fed with tubes for the first few weeks of her life, since she wasn’t strong or coordinated enough to suck on a bottle
  • You'd never know that she was too week to be held to nurse
  • You’d never know that she spent her first 32 days in the NICU before coming home

You’d never know.  But you do now!

Twinkle Toes is not alone in this battle.  Every year, half a million babies in the US are born before their time.  They are born too soon, too small and too sick and the numbers are growing every year.  That number, half a million, equates to 1 in every 8 babies!!!!  One in Eight!!
Since 1981, the rate of premature births has risen 30%, and in half the cases it is not understood what caused it.  The March of Dimes is leading the fight for answers, and ultimately, prevention.
Today is National Prematurity Awareness Day!  You know our story of Twinkle Toes and even if you don’t, I’d like to ask a small favor.  If you have a story of your own or know of a preemie, please share it today.  Share it in support of The March of Dimes.  Visit The March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness to join the fight against prematurity.
We need to fight – because babies shouldn’t have to.   And no parent should ever have to face that battle!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Why I started my blog

One of the reasons was obviously to document Twinkle Toes’ progress and journey as she got older.  But there is a far more important reason, at least to me there was.
Over the last few years, while we were desperately trying to get pregnant, I read and followed several blogs.  Those blogs covered everything from TTC to the journey of parenthood.  Some of these blogs we so sad and tragic to read at times but it helped me learn what to expect if, god forbid, we were faced with anything remotely like the stories I was following.
I am so thankful for those mommy bloggers that documented the ups and downs; the good times and bad; the funny stories and the heart wrenching struggles that their children face.  Without them, I wouldn’t have been as strong or knowledgeable about Twinkle Toes’ early arrival.
So today, I’d like to say thank you to the following mommy bloggers whose journeys I have followed and continue to do so:
Jaxon and Brady’s Journey - found Here http://lettenbergertwins.blogspot.com/
Three Cheers for Babies - found Here http://threecheersforbabies.blogspot.com/
Out Stork got Lost… - found here http://ourstorkgotlost.com/

I am hopeful that my blog can do the same for others.  I hope that I can watch the number of followers grow.  I hope that other momma’s will reach out and contact me.  And that I can develop friendships with some of these wonderful people.
So let me finish this post by saying “Thank You” to all of the wonderful mommy bloggers out in the blogging world, for sharing your ups and downs and everything in between.  Without you, many of us would be lost.

Sincerely Grateful,
Momma J

Great news!

I just got word that Twinkle Toes passed her overnight oxygen test!  That means she can go without any oxygen while sleeping!

So what that really means -- no more oxygen!!!  We are so excited about this.

We will keep the oxygen around for about a week or two and then it's all going back!

We are still waiting to hear if she has been approved for the Synagis shot.  That is the shot that preemies need for RSV season, which is now upon us.

Toys for Differently-Abled Kids

This blew me away and in a good way!

I learned that ToysRUs offers a catalog for Differently-Abled Kids.  They have offered this guide for over 20 years!  Who knew.

The guide features specially selected toys that encourage play for children with physical, cognitive or developmental disabilities.  You can find more info here regarding the guide and this amazing service.

And why call them Differently-Abled?  Well, ToyRUs believe that all children have unique skills and abilities.

This guide, which can be viewed online as well as picked up in any ToyRUs location, categorizes toys by various skills.  The skills include but aren't limited to:  Auditory, Creativity, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Language, Visual and the list goes on.

I truly think this is a unknown resource and that more people should know about it!

Join the Fight!

Hello readers!

November is Prematurity Awareness Month. I invite all of you to come join me at Bloggers Unite. They are partnering with the March of Dimes in support of Fight For Preemies. The goal is to have 500 bloggers posting on and before Prematurity Awareness day - November 17th.

So consider this your official invitation. Please post a special story about either your own preemie miracle or maybe you know a preemie and their story. We want everyone to learn why it is SO important to support the ongoing need for prematurity research funding.

You can also grab a badge or banner for your blog.

Itzbeen Timer

Yes, I may be a little OCD with this timer AND the Baby Log but hey, it works for us.

This little gem just rocks for keeping track of the last time that Twinkle Toes ate, how long she has been napping, when I last pumped and her last diaper change.

It lights up, has a clock and a flashlight - for finding the lost pacifer in the middle of the night.

Holy Cow!

I feel like a dairy cow!  I counted the number of frozen bags of milk last night.

Can I get a drumroll please........

I currently have 45  6 oz. bags of milk frozen for Twinkle Toes.  That's 270 oz. of milk for her down the road.

No wonder I feel like a dairy cow.

Happy Halloween

Just a little note from Twinkle Toes:

My First Halloween!

We chose to not get a costume for Twinkle Toes this year.  With Halloween on a Sunday and with it typically being a cold day in Colorado, I just didn't think it was worth it.  But next year, next year we are doing to do it up BIG!

We hope everyone has a great Halloween!  Please stay safe and enjoy your candy!

Product Review - Skip Hop Baby Log

Shortly before we left the NICU, our pediatrician highly suggested that we buy a baby log to track everything that Twinkle Toes was doing.

I did an online search a few days before she was released and found this beautiful tool:

Behold the Skip Hop Day to Night Baby Log!  This thing is amazing and the clock/timer that comes with the book makes it worth it alone.  The LED lights are great at Midnight when you need to see what time it is and to log something down.

The log comes in a nice hardbound binder and has enough pages for 6 months!!  Refills are available too.  This gem of a log, can be found here and is a bit pricey at $39 but the clock and binder make it worth it in my humble opinion.  Amazon.com also carries it.

I know it may seem a bit OCD but it really truly has helped, especially when I can't seem to remember diddle squat these days.  I take it with me to Twinkle Toes' doctor appointments so I know exactly how much she is eating and the quantity, etc.

Maybe a better title post would be - How I spent my pumping time!

That's right - Two Thousand, Five Hundred and Sixty pages.  Yes, that is how I've spent some of my time while pumping!  What are all those pages belong to you ask?  Well, as much as I am embarrassed to admit it, its the number of pages in the Twilight Series and I read them all while pumping!

Strike that!  I had actually read half of the first book in the series, while I was pregnant and then I got bored.  Then life hit and even while I was on bed rest in the hospital, I never read any of the books.

Nope, I waited until life normalized and then when it came to pumping, I was bored.  And time has the nasty little way of c-r-e-e-p-i-n-g along when you're pumping and watching your bottles fill up.  So, I started reading the remainder of the first book, then the 2nd book, then the 3rd book and finally the final 768 pages of the final book.

While the books and storyline are good, I had to force myself to wade thru the first book.  Then it was "well, I've read it and bored while pumping, I guess I'll read the 2nd book".  At that point, I couldn't turn back and was still pumping.  I finally finished the 4th book and now I'm bored.  I have now had to find other things to read.  Sometimes I read catch up with back issues of magazines that I had to set aside.  Other times its various mail order catalogs and lastly, it's the sucky, never ending medical bills and bills in general.

But yes, I will fully admit - I read the entire Twilight series.  But I regret to inform you all, I AM NOT A TWIHARD and I never will be.

I should have just stuck to watching the movies!  :)

October 27, 2010

Good day. No, make that a GREAT day!!!

Twinkle Toes had her weight check, additional shots and oxygen check.  My girl is a rockstar but we all KNEW that.

She now weighs 10 lbs on the nose - which means that she has gained 27 oz within 27 days.  Yep that's right, that's an ounce a day!  Right where they want to see her.

And drum roll please......

She passed her oxygen test with flying colors.  So she can go without the oxygen tank and just use it while sleeping at night!  That is huge and means that I don't have to carry that blasted thing around to daycare!

As you can see, she is excited too!  :)

Ahhhhh, sweet freedom.

We are going to do a happy dance as a family tonight!
